Workplace bullying is a huge problem in Australian workplaces – and it can cost you dearly in fines and lost productivity.
That’s why it is imperative that you have a sound and comprehensive workplace bullying policy in place.
You must make sure your policy:
- States that workplace bullying is unacceptable in any way, shape or form.
- Defines workplace bullying and provides clear examples of it;
- States exactly who the policy applies to, i.e. employees, independent contractors, visitors to the workplace etc.;
- States exactly what will happen if someone breaches the bullying policy;
- Outlines exactly how to report all incidences of bullying and encourages people to do so; and
- Clearly outlines how a bullying complaint will be investigated.
And remember, it is not good enough to simply have this policy in place. You need to make sure that your existing managers and employees are aware of it and understand its contents and you should also ensure that new employees receive information about the policy when they are inducted into your workplace.
You should also ensure that the policy is regularly reviewed and updated if necessary.
