Does a worker need a good reason for requesting unpaid leave?

A long-term employee is seeking a 3-to-6-month break to visit his home in China. He has not disclosed the specific reason for the need to return home – he simply stated it was due to a bad family situation. Am I within my rights to have a more detailed explanation?


You have no obligation to grant the employee unpaid leave in these circumstances (unless a family member is seriously ill or has passed away, in which case they would be entitled to compassionate leave). You may like to remind the employee of this and request he provide further information before unpaid leave is granted.
