Your questions answered: Can we sack an employee for misuse of a company credit card?

By Portner Press on January 22nd, 2020
  1. Termination of Employment
  2. Dismissal

Our employee has a work credit card. They used it for personal use without permission – several transactions in one day amounted to about $2,000. They have agreed to pay this back.

Is this employee’s misconduct sufficient reason for dismissal?

Serious misconduct includes theft. You do not have to provide a warning to an employee who has engaged in serious misconduct. This is called a summary dismissal.

However, before you summarily dismiss an employee, make sure that the misconduct has been fully investigated and determined to be true based on fact.

The investigation into the misconduct must be procedurally fair, unbiased and impartial.
