Your questions answered: Do we have to pay our casual employee extra on Saturday?

  2. Fair Work Act

Q
If a casual is asked to work Saturday (which is not part of their normal roster) what rate do we have to pay? (i.e. overtime rates or Saturday rates?)
A
Generally, the casual employee would be entitled to be paid the applicable Saturday rates for working on a Saturday. They may also be entitled to overtime rates if they work additional hours on the Saturday, in excess of the hours they were asked to work. However, this will depend on the terms of the employee’s contract, award or enterprise agreement (if any).

To determine this employee’s exact entitlement, the Pay Calculator tool on the Fair Work Ombudsman web page may be of assistance: https://calculate.fairwork.gov.au/FindYourAward.
