How can we respond to an employee's breaches of our attendance policy?

Q: One of our employees has been absent on several occasions without notifying his manager or providing support documentation such as a medical certificate – in breach of our business’ attendance policy. In the latest (and current) incident, the employee has been absent for several days, without word. We tried to get in touch with him many times without success. Finally, the employee sent an SMS to his manager advising the manager that he was sleeping. We have had no further communication from him for a couple of days. Are we able to take disciplinary action against this employee for his absences?
