What is an equal opportunity workplace?

An equal opportunity workplace is a workplace where all employees are treated with equal dignity and respect.

An equal opportunity workplace is a workplace where all employees:

  • have equal opportunities; and
  • are free from discrimination.
Tip: Equal opportunity does not mean treating everyone the same.It means all employees are treated with dignity and respect.

Equal opportunities

Equal opportunity means ensuring that employment policies and practices are based on, and operate according to, the principle of merit. All employees must have the same access to jobs, opportunities and careers based on their knowledge and skills – regardless of their personal attributes, e.g. gender, age, race.
